  • about Gabriela Assmar has 20 years of mediation experience and has been a full-time<br>mediator for the past 11 years. She started her career in 1992 as a transaction<br>lawyer, both in-house and as outside counsel. She has been head of legal<br>departments, public affairs director and ombudsman at multinationals and has been<br>responsible for multidisciplinary teams designing business strategies in<br>telecommunications, investment banking, insurance and industrial sectors.<br>She specialized in mediation in New York, from 1999, during an LLM at New York<br>University and work in a New York law firm. She is a recognized pioneer and<br>developer of the mediation market in Brazil, and has served as a mediator in<br>commercial, corporate, multi-stakeholder (social and environmental), family, criminal<br>and community conflicts with the Rio de Janeiro court system and in private practice.<br>She lectures and teaches mediation at numerous institutions in Brazil, such as The<br>State University in Rio de Janeiro, The Federal University in Rio de Janeiro,<br>Fundação Getúlio Vargas, the Bar Association School of Law and in-company<br>trainings. She is a mediation instructor for the National Council of Justice. She was<br>one of the founders of the mediation commission of the Rio de Janeiro State Bar, for<br>which she won the Innovare Award 2009, given by the Supreme Court for<br>innovations in the legal arena. She has been involved in the discussions regarding<br>public policies on mediation within the private sector, the court system and the<br>legislative power. She was a co-author of the Brazilian Mediation Law (Law<br>13.140/2015). In 2011 Ms Assmar was a Weinstein Fellow at JAMS and she is a<br>member of the international panel of CPR mediators.<br>Ms Assmar has also developed mediation in Brazil through conflict resolution<br>programmes for children in schools located in the most violent areas of Rio de<br>Janeiro. She served as founder and executive director of the Brazilian Center for<br>Partners for Democratic Change International. She also founded the private<br>mediation services provider ProAcordo – Mediation of Business Conflicts.<br>Gabriela Assmar was the first Brazilian named by the prestigious publication<br>Who&amp;#39;sWho Commercial Mediation. Her name can be found the editions 2012, 2013<br>and 2014.
